The US Supreme Court deregulated sports betting in 2018 and at least 21 states have legalized it. At the time of this writing, there are at least 17 states that allow online sports betting. Although Connecticut has passed legislation legalizing sports wagering through a tribal-state compact, it hasn’t yet launched. While retail betting was approved last month, online sports wagering is expected to debut this fall. In Connecticut, there are still some restrictions, such as a ban on college sports, so you won’t find the option on the state’s website. However, online sports betting is already legal, and is currently being offered by casinos run by Native American tribes.
Nevada has been one of the hardest states to legalize sports betting. While Nevada has legalized sports wagering for casinos, it’s illegal for most other states. In fact, the state has never legalized sports wagering. But it recently overturned the federal ban on single-game gambling. And now, Nevada has passed legislation allowing citizens to make bets online and in-store. In New York, the state legislature plans to legalize online sports betting in April 2021. No specific operator has been chosen as of yet.
Where Is Sports Betting Legal?
While Louisiana has a smaller population, but a large number of professional sports teams, voters in 55 parishes have approved sports wagering. Officials hope to have the first sports books in the state by fall of 2020. After the Supreme Court ruling, Delaware followed suit. It is the first state in the country to have sports betting without amendments. It has also allowed online and retail sports betting. But with the federal government’s push, the state may be a bit slower to get up to speed than other states.
Though Kansas and Indiana are the only two states to legalize the sport, the other four have no sports gambling legislation. Only Iowa and New Jersey have a legal sports betting industry. Despite the challenges involved in legalizing sports betting, New Mexico is a relatively small state with minimal regulatory barriers. In the summer of 2018, the state’s gaming compacts with New Mexico’s tribes made sports gambling legal. The Pueblo of Santa Ana tribe opened the first in-state casino in May of this year. A few other states are still considering allowing the activity. They’re waiting to make a decision and decide if they’ll allow it or not.
