Remodeling a bathroom requires taking into account a few things you wouldn’t normally do when working on other rooms in your home. Moisture and moisture barriers should always be at the top of the list of considerations. Backboard is one of those requirements that is a necessary component whenever you are replacing drywall in a bathroom remodeling project.

Backerboard is used to refer to a particular type of drywall that is placed behind ceramic tile to prevent moisture from damaging the wall. Originally a cement-based product, it is now available in other materials such as plaster or fiberglass. Regular drywall is susceptible to moisture buildup, even behind tile, and is not effective for use in a bathroom.

Made of a dense, non-porous material, a backing board may be required by law in some states. Before beginning any bathroom remodeling project that involves tiling, be sure to check the building codes in your area to determine requirements.

The backing board was traditionally made from a cement type material. Newer products are now available that are just as effective and easier to use and install. Once such tile backing product is called DensSheild. Manufactured by Georgia-Pacific, it has been designed to prevent moisture from entering the wall cavity.

This board product is made of fiberglass. It is extremely light and easy to install. A heat-cured acrylic coating creates an impenetrable barrier between moisture and the wall space behind the tile. It is also resistant to microbial activity, making it exceptionally resistant to mold and mildew. DensShield Tile Backer is the only product of its kind on the market and is a good choice for bathroom remodeling projects.

DensShield backer board is an excellent choice for use in any high-moisture area. From floors to ceilings to sidewalls, this product can give you the peace of mind and protection you need in bathrooms, kitchens, pool areas, and anywhere there is high moisture exposure.

Regardless of what type of backboard you choose for your project, be sure to use one wherever you install tile. Creates the perfect moisture barrier in a situation where you would otherwise leave your home subject to serious moisture damage and/or health related issues caused by mold and microbial growth.

Georgia-Pacific received the Good Cleaning Seal of Approval for its new interior drywall products. This is the first time that such an award has been given to such a product and it is an important recognition for a product for domestic use. A good housekeeping maintainer examined these products for their anti-mold characteristics and found that they offered excellent results.

When undertaking a bathroom remodeling project in your home, be sure to use a backer board product. If this is your first experience handling such a product, look online for easy-to-follow instructions. Consider your product options and choose one that meets your requirements for protection and ease of installation.
