Trincomalee, located on the east coast, is known for its wide, serene stretches of white-sand beaches that gently slope down to the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. The sea in this area is calm and crystal clear, ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving. Pigeon Island, floating just a few kilometers offshore, is a very small island, completely covered in pure white coral, offering stunning underwater scenes of more coral, tropical fish, and other marine life.
Further down the southeast coast, Arugam Bay is not only a world-class dive site, but also a tranquil spot that offers fantastic diving and snorkeling experiences. A unique experience could be a short boat ride to the Basses Reefs, which are marked by two lighthouses and one of the best dive sites in Sri Lanka. This coral reef is made up of two huge reef complexes that stretch off the coast of Yala National Park. The underwater delights here are spectacular, from clear blue water to rugged ancient sandstone formations, and an abundance of dazzling marine life.
The southern dive sites near Yala National Park are popular for their beautiful natural bays lined with palm trees. The seas are a bit rougher than other coastal areas along this coast, however the soft golden beaches and clear water attract many tourists with views of beautiful coral reefs and brightly colored fish. Sea turtles are commonly seen here.
The west coast is a bit more rugged and dynamic than the east. Most of the cities here are developed and have most of the necessities required for the tourism in which it thrives. The west coast sea is the best for snorkeling and diving from November to April.
For an avid diver, the coral sanctuary around Hikkaduwa should be a must see, with a large shallow area surrounded by a renowned reef that is protected. Snorkeling is the most environmentally friendly way to enjoy the wonders beneath the gentle waves, and almost all properties offer scuba diving facilities.
The northwestern coast has an unspoiled stretch of beautiful beach that offers extraordinary snorkeling and scuba diving. Sri Lanka’s largest coral reef, Bar Reef, is just an hour’s boat ride from shore. This breathtakingly beautiful reef is home to numerous species of tropical fish, including manta rays, sharks, turtles and other forms of marine life protected by colorful layers of coral. Further afield is Turtle Point Lodge, consisting of two underwater ridges, and the beautiful Pearl Banks, which is a protected home for rare pearl oysters and various other marine life. Both places are perfect for diving opportunities. The underwater currents here are quite weak, which makes snorkeling and diving safe and enjoyable activities.
