Abdominoplasty – Is a flat stomach in your future

A tummy tuck, also known as a tummy tuck, removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen. An important component of most tummy tucks is tightening loose abdominal muscles. It is these muscles and the overlying fascia that are permanently overstretched after a pregnancy. A properly performed tummy tuck will make a noticeable difference in the appearance of the abdomen restoring not only shape but also confidence. With all surgical procedures there is a downside. A tummy tuck cannot be done without creating a transverse lower abdominal scar, similar to a C-section but longer. The advantage is that the scar can be hidden under most swimsuits and underwear. There are many women who are good candidates for this procedure. It is especially useful in women who have stretched skin and excess fat in the abdomen after pregnancy and weight loss. There is a new category of patients who want a tummy tuck surgery. This is the massive weight loss patient.

Most tummy tuck procedures last approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on the size of the problem and the amount of contouring that is required. The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia and may require an overnight stay. A recovery time of 1 to 2 weeks is needed after a tummy tuck. To ease the recovery process, a pain pump may be inserted. This is a syringe-like mechanism that delivers a diluted Novacaine-type anesthetic to the surgical site. This general speeds recovery and decreases the amount of painkillers needed. By the third to fourth week, most patients are returning to their normal activities.

After surgery, a tape bandage is applied directly to the incision. This can be left intact for the first week. Superficial dressings can be changed as needed. There will be a closed suction drain coming out of the skin. This is to remove any accumulated fluid under the skin.

You will be instructed to empty and record the drain output each day. The drains will be removed after 7 to 10 days depending on the result. In general we like less than 30cc for a 24 hour period. An elastic abdominal binder is applied to provide support and help with soft tissue contouring. Never use a heating pad directly on a surgical area. The skin may have decreased sensation and it is possible to develop a severe burn.

It is important to walk during the recovery period. Think of your calves as a pump. Every time you walk, your calves are pumping to prevent blood from pooling in your calves. This will help avoid the complication of deep vein thrombosis, or DVT.

During the first 2 to 3 weeks, you will gradually return to your normal activities. Following these simple instructions will promote a smooth recovery.
