Different types of pointe shoes: how to classify a pointe shoe

Trying to classify the different types of pointe shoes available on the market today depends on which part of the shoe is categorized for classification. Pointe shoes can be classified into different groups based on their construction methods, popularity, functionality, and other variables.

Beginning with the earliest stages of construction at the factory, the shoes will be labeled as a machine-made or hand-made model. Within those two categories, they can be classified as “in stock” or made to measure. A custom made shoe sits alone and cannot be further classified. After a pointe shoe is classified as a standard model, the shoe’s design specifications will determine if it is one of these different types of pointe shoe:

• Half point or Pre-point

• Beginner or student

• Intermediate

• Advanced

• Professional

Within the design classifications, we can divide them into categories. For example, an original beginner’s shoe crafted from hard shafts works for dancers who have higher arches. A professional machine-made model with a flexible stem and split soles can be considered “performance ready.”

Once the design specifications of each model are known, both dancers and teachers will rate certain models as better for pole work than center work. Some pointe shoes are known as “workhorses”, while others are extremely lightweight. Sorting can also be done using the gluing methods used in the factory during construction.

At the retail level, certain models are popular or not recommended. As you can see, there are many ways to classify the various models that are being produced in the world today. These are the different types of pointe shoes:

• Traditional or polymeric pasta

• Machine made or handmade

• Custom gold stock

• Demi-pointe, beginner, intermediate, advanced or professional

• Design specifications including stem strength, profile / box shape, instep length, and platform size

• A dance teacher / academy is recommended

• Retail popularity and best-selling products

Listing the design specifications for each individual model would involve writing a book. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of models available in the world today. There are so many different types of pointe shoes available today that there is a suitable shoe for every type of foot if you keep looking.
