How to start your career as an air traffic controller

Air traffic controller is one of the most difficult jobs as it requires your full commitment and attention. Being a traffic controller requires a lot of responsibility on your part, as you are responsible for the safety of people. In this sense, this work is quite hard, stressful and challenging. Air traffic keeps you busy in busy airports and you need to be vigilant as there is no room for error in this job. Although air traffic controller faces a difficult time in the service, they pay well for their hard work. You just need to keep working hard to reach higher ranks for healthy emoluments.

This job has a number of requirements that you need to meet before applying for this job. traffic controller’s job under the FAA, a government organization. Therefore, the first thing is that you must be a citizen of the United States. The second requirement is that you must be under thirty-one years of age. It does not mean that older people are not trained enough to go into this job, but rather that the FAA prefers young people, who are energetic and have less reaction times and can respond quickly to emergency situations. Other things that are included in the selection criteria are your complete medical exam, including drug tests, etc. and your background will also be checked for security purposes.

If you want to become a traffic controller, you must have similar work experience or a college degree. If you don’t have a degree or work experience, don’t expect to be hired. If you have the required degree of work experience, prepare for training. You can join different FAA approved community colleges or local airport flight schools for AT-SAT (Air Traffic Screening and Training) preparation. This is independent training and will allow you to gather useful information to pass the pre-employment exam.

Once you think you have learned enough about air traffic control and have all the vital information with you, you can proceed to take the pre-employment exam. You must score at least 70 percent or higher on the test to qualify for the next step. Passing this exam means you are now ready to apply for the air traffic controller job. There are no limited attempts to pass the exams; you can take the exams until you pass them.

After you have passed all the initial assessments and exams, you are now ready to apply for the job. You may need to apply for the job or simply drop off your resume with the human resources department at the airport. The proper authorities and the FAA will collect your resume from there for further consideration. The corresponding department will contact you if you are shortlisted and the rest of the paperwork will be carried out like any other job.
