Most people remember their college years as some of the most fun and energetic years of their lives. College students go to classes, parties and bars. But what is there to do for those of us who are a few, or more than a few, years older than the average mixed-education student? Many of the best universities in the country are located in cities and small towns, and while these less metropolitan areas may seem like they have little to offer, college towns have plenty to do.

Sports

This one is a bit obvious. College sports fans are rabid, and big football and basketball games can draw crowds that rival professional games. What many visitors don’t realize is that sports stadiums are also an attraction. Often these historic buildings are also home to museums commemorating famous players and legendary contests.

Sure, college students may not be known for being picky. Cheap and fast certainly sells well in the food world that surrounds campuses. But the influx of new students, visiting parents and rival teams, along with the population of older, more sophisticated teachers and administrators, attracts new trend-setting chefs and restaurateurs. It’s no wonder why college towns are featured frequently on food-related TV shows.

Culture

Speaking of that older population, the saturation of highly educated people creates an environment primed for professional theater, music, and public speaking engagements. Even educational presentations fill big houses in college towns because professors challenge students with things to do that can earn them extra credit. Some of these professors are academic celebrities and offer open lectures outside of their regular teaching commitments. Additionally, universities host national conferences on a variety of topics, bringing dozens of experts to campuses across the country.

Music

College towns have always been a hotbed of little-known and rising stars. Many successful bands have been formed while the members attended classes together. Some of the most prolific small and midsize record labels in the country have addresses within a few miles of a university. Music clubs located near campuses often host secret shows and showcases for these labels to scout or promote new talent. It’s common practice to see great music legends appearing at local nightclubs after shows.

Complementing all the music, arts, and culture that visit college towns, another exciting thing to do when visiting these areas is to see student performances and presentations. Many college campuses have a campus improv group looking for an audience. They also feature visual artists on display in a student gallery, an a cappella group practicing for competitions, and even debating societies preparing young minds for future political careers.

While skating rinks and bowling alleys have faded in the deepest corners of America’s suburbs in recent years, these types of businesses still thrive in college towns, where young people have plenty of free time and disposable income.

College towns offer many things to do and offer a diverse population. Consider spending some time getting to know a smaller town or neighborhood located near an institution of higher learning.
