Things to do before traveling with your Shitzu

Shtizu’s love of travel and a well-bred shitzu make him a magnificent representative of the breed. Whether he’s on a long trip or a short jaunt, his shitzu’s companionship and camaraderie can make the trip even more fun.

Here are some things you can do to make your and your shitzu’s journey much more comfortable and less stressful:

1). Make sure your shitzu is crate trained and feels comfortable and safe inside it. This training begins early in life, using the travel box daily as a safe haven and placing treats inside it from time to time. When it’s time to take a trip, your shitzu will feel right at home in his travel crate and won’t be anxious or rowdy.

2). Get a health certificate to travel. Make sure your shitzu is in excellent health and able to make the trip. It would also be wise to ask your vet to do a physical exam and check that all necessary vaccinations are up to date. You should also ask about any recommended medications you may need for the trip.

3). Make sure you have all the things you will need during your trip, including items in case of illness or emergency. Here is a list of things to make sure you have before your trip:

– travel kennel

– Collar with nameplate and leash

– Dishes, food and bottled water.

– Medicine

– First aid box

– Toys and bedding.

– Grooming supplies

– Collector of droppings, plastic bags and paper towels.

– Vet records, photo ID, microchip number, and contact phone numbers

4). Make reservations in advance. Be sure to check with hotels or campgrounds to make sure pets are allowed. You should also reserve space for a dog with the airlines if air travel is part of your travel plans.

Travel can be fun, but all too often things can go wrong. That is why it is very important that you make sure that you take all the precautions to keep you and your shitzu safe. Your dog will love your vigilance.
