Zagreb – Historic City in Croatia

Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and a wonderful Hungarian-style city with beautiful museums, art galleries and churches. The huge main square, Trg Bana Jelacica, divides the city into upper and lower parts, each with its own atmosphere.

Old town in the upper town

Gornji Grad is the uppermost and oldest town and is built on two hills. It’s a lovely area to wander the winding cobbled streets and explore the impressive buildings along your walk. Start your walk in the main square and work your way to the grand cathedral. This route will pass through the main market of the city. The cathedral was first built in 1217 and has been rebuilt and enlarged ever since. The twin towers and neo-gothic front were added in the 1880s. Visit the impressive interior with a beautiful ornate masterpiece and the Ten Commandments written on the north wall in 12th-century handwriting.

Lotrscak tower views

Iglesia de San Marcos was built in the 13th century, also rebuilt in the 1880s and known for the blue, white and red roof tiles. The pattern is in the colors of the Zagreb district and the kingdoms of Dalmatia, Slavonia and Croatia. The Lotrscak Tower was part of the defense in the 13th century when it warned the citizens of Zagreb of an impending attack. In memory of this important role, a cannon is fired every day at noon. Climb up the tower for stunning views of Zagreb.

Museums in the Lower City

Donji Grad is the lower part of the city and was built in the late 19th century. From the upper part of the city you can easily enter the lower part of the city with the funicular. Explore the attractive squares around the beautiful gardens, parks and wide boulevards. Take a walk through the Medvednica Nature Park to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. You’ll find many museums here, especially the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters and the Mimara Museum.
