3 quick, easy and cheap tips on model trains

Here are 3 quick tips you might want to consider for your model train layout:

Model Railway Council #1

Glossy surfaces can spoil the realism of any model train. Glossy surfaces can make buildings and trains look fake. You don’t want everything to look like it came straight out of the box. An easy way to remove that shine is to spray the frame or cars with Dullcote (Testors #1260 Clear Matte Lacquer Coating). You can buy Dullcote at most hobby stores and it comes in a small spray can like many other model car paint colors.

Model Rail Tip #2

The ballasted track adds more scenic realism to a layout. However, you need to make sure the entire electrical system is in order and all rail splices are tight before you start ballasting your model railway. Otherwise, after the track has been ballasted, some sections of the track may not work properly.

For shipyards you may want to use a finer grade of ballast to give the impression of lighter lines, while on the main line you may want a thicker ballast.

Model Railway Tip #3

Sawdust can be an inexpensive material to make a groundcover. Pick up some fabric dye at the grocery store or craft store. Mix the dye according to the instructions and start adding the sawdust. Keep adding the sawdust until all the liquid is gone. Preheat the kitchen oven and then turn it off. Then put the colored sawdust in a baking dish and put it in the warm oven for an hour or so to dry. Be very careful not to start a fire. You should only dry the sawdust, NOT heat or cook it. Security First!

Once it’s dry and cool, put it in a bag to store it until you’re ready to use it. You can apply it to the ground with white glue and to trees with spray glue or hairspray.

Have fun working and operating your model train layout.
