Color photographic inkjet printing is done using primarily three colors other than black: cyan, magenta, and yellow, known as CMYK. Rich, light color prints are very affordable with this high-quality glossy paper. Statistics suggest that, on average, 60% of documents printed in businesses are mono A4, 20% are A4 colour, 17% are photocopies and only 3% are A3. Dye-based inks have high gloss and a wide color gamut, but are not sufficiently lightfast or waterproof. The former is usually more suitable for simple monochrome printing, while the latter is used for colour.

With color printing, because different inks are mixed, they need to dry as quickly as possible to prevent blurring. If slow-drying ink is used for color printing, the colors tend to blend together before drying. Combined cartridges will have all colors in one cartridge. Some cartridge systems have 4, 5 and 6 color systems. The entire cartridge must be replaced when a color runs out.
