Microwave oven: an essential appliance in the modern kitchen

A high-quality microwave is a versatile addition to any eventful kitchen, allowing you to heat up food, cook ready meals and entire dishes in no time in a regular oven.

Microwave ovens generate electromagnetic rays. This radiation stimulates the water molecules in the food, which causes the food to heat up. Microwaves don’t permeate very sharply, so food heated briefly will be lukewarm on the outside but still cold in the center; that is why it is important to mix the food during heating. Because only the food is being heated rather than the oven itself, food cooked in a microwave will in no way build up a coating.

the different types

There are actually four types of microwave ovens: convection, over-the-range or built-in, countertop, and combination ovens. To help select the right one, here are the different types and their pros and cons:

  • tabletop microwave oven This is suitable for those who have a larger or wider kitchen counter. It has a simple function, you just need to plug it into the wall and you can start heating or cooking your meals.
  • convection microwave oven – These microwave type units with conventional microwave technology with thermal energy allow you to bake, brown and roast your food. It comes equipped with a heating component and also includes a fan to help move hot air. These elements make this type of oven a true energy saver. Cooking with a convection microwave requires some modification, but it turns out to be much easier and more cost-effective in the long run.
  • Built-in and over-the-range microwave – If your countertop is a bit cluttered and you can’t make room for a countertop microwave, a built-in or over-the-range oven may be the best option. Due to their features plus the cost of installation, these microwaves are generally more expensive.
  • microwave combination – Combination ovens combine the good organization of a microwave with the traditional browning and roasting of a conventional oven and grill. The benefit of this type of microwave is that it gives you the flexibility to switch between types, allowing you to heat food in the same way as you would in a convection microwave or conventional oven.

The microwave oven is a versatile and time-saving kitchen appliance that uses microwave radiation to heat food. Microwaved foods are just as healthy as foods cooked in other ways, and research indicates that microwaving preserves more vitamins, minerals, and nutrients than boiling.
