Poet colors others with thoughts and music

“I want to believe and behave as if the best will not come unless I am better. I want to believe and behave as if the change will not occur unless I produce the change.”

The poet was born Jermaine D Gordon to his parents Ira and Beatrice Gordon, on July 3, 1975, the eighth of 9 children. His parents did not know that this little bundle of joy, although a sickly child, would become a traveling light for many, illuminating hearts and transforming minds.

Jermaine Gordon is a motivator. By firmly believing in God and trusting in him, he has been endowed with many talents, from the original Creator, from whom he is inspired.

Gordon, who is very creative as a musician, singer and poet, says that he discovered his musical talent at the age of 4 and his writing skills during his teens. “In fact, I started playing drums at age 9 in a New Testament church in Bull Bay, St. Andrew,” where he grew up. Since then, he has toured the island with bands like Breakthrough, Hummingbird, Redeemed, and Soul Seekers.

Today, the alert musician serves as one of the National Music Directors for The Church of God of Prophecy in Jamaica and Grand Cayman. In his role as Music Director, he says: “Music is a very powerful tool that is often misunderstood even by those who profess to be ‘professionals’ like musicians, DJs, producers.

Among his thoughts on music, he observes: “Eventually we act out the words we constantly entertain and become the songs we constantly sing.” That is why he also warns: “A song is not only the lyrics of the music, but it is a part of the soul that expresses itself and, with assigned wings, flies from one soul to another.”

Always, since childhood, he has been encouraged to express and use his abilities, just as he discovered them. Then the church provided him with many opportunities to express himself, and to this end, he remains loyal to the Creator.

In his church he is known as the ‘psalmist’ for being able to compose and produce a complete song on the spot. Write 6 to 8 songs a day. The members appreciate his deep, anointed music, and are in awe of his ability to invoke the presence of God when he delivers his talented fingers to the piano.

As a drummer, he is also a sound engineer, trained in live broadcast techniques, event organizer, worship leader, choir and music director, composer and arranger, producer, counselor, and a bit of a photographer. More often now, he is asked to make special presentations, based on his record as an impactful motivator.

A 1994 graduate of Kingston College (KC), he attended Edna College for the Visual and Performing Arts (Jamaica School of Music), where he studied classical piano and flute.

At age 13, Gordon had his first “work” experience. Curiously, he is an accountant by profession. After KC, he went directly to KPMG, where he assumed the role of auditor. Currently, he is a certified accountant under the ACCA board, and is a Junior Manager at KCT Services Ltd, the managing company of The Kingston Container Terminal on behalf of the Port Authority of Jamaica.

This level of accounting developed an understanding of leadership and follow-through as a sense of responsibility for success. He talks about the “art of following” in a recent interview. He observes that “nowadays not many people know how to follow, even those who lead are sometimes bad followers.” In that sense, he hopes that more will be done to develop better followers and reiterates that good followers become better leaders.

Gordon draws inspiration from many elements, especially from nature. “My creative energy is often also triggered by very strong passions, love, hurt feelings and disappointments, sexual energy, and a desire to achieve.”

Gordon admits that he likes to chat on the phone. It is easy to understand, since Gordon is a member of high society, who gives himself to the progress of everyone he meets. He leaves no conversation without sharing a thought that flows rapidly from the tip of his tongue, inspired even by a moment of encounter with him.

His hobbies are nature walks, time alone by the sea, watching movies, sporting events, traveling.

It’s easy to combine your commitment to express yourself, honing your skills, and your full-time job. He says that it is an “art of nature” and an “artist of the world”; therefore it just makes everything connect. There are still challenges when you add your family life that you believe in to the picture.

Gordon, who for now only works on promoting his inspiring products and services in addition to his full-time job, has simple goals. “It inspires hope, puts a smile on a sad face, gives encouragement,” says Gordon, who reiterates that he loves people. So use all your talents and abilities to sow seeds, which will sprout for the harvest, as many will realize the calls of God, the Creator.

Apart from that, he also hopes to write and produce songs that will be performed and performed in churches in Jamaica and around the world.

To date he has only released an instrumental CD “Led by The Spirit”; It has already attracted many, from Jamaica, Canada and the UK, thirsty for its offering. He hopes to release his self-produced debut album in November and has already released 3 of his singles. The released ones are “If I trust your hands”, “Stubborn Man – How long” performed by Ryan Berry and “Jesus, Oh Jesus” sung by Dawn Martin.

His book series is a compilation of his written thoughts, his determination to “inspire people’s hearts and minds with positive and uplifting words. He has already left marks in the thousands. The Color and Power of Your Thoughts book, in his opinion , is “the contribution of his parents to make the world a better place.” He explains that they raised him “as a healthy child to help heal the world.”

His second book “DISCOVERING THE GOLD IN YOU” is already edited and paged, and is scheduled to be released in July. Discovering the Gold in You was inspired by the true story of a man who sold his 52 acres of land to go on a worldwide search to discover diamonds. Through this book, he seeks to help others find and understand their “gold.”

Jermaine organizes ‘Sing-shops’ worship and vocal training workshops across the island. Currently, he is scheduled to make presentations, as a musician, poet, motivator in schools and universities. It is aimed only at secondary and tertiary level students, and with the OAaSIS International Foundation it visits children at the primary and basic level, in schools, communities and churches.

It prioritizes young adolescents and adults with its motivational sessions, but with the Foundation their motivation is spent on empowering the creative mind of young people, the main objective of the entity.

Her passion is transforming the ‘victimization’ of especially teens, and Alpha Academy is a high school used to her motivational visits.

One of her key memories is meeting young women who are victims because they are still virgins, unlike others who have at least two children at 25 or younger.

On March 28, he will venture to Seargantville, St Catherine en route to Bog Walk, and in April he will be in Port Royal with the foundation. St Theresa’s Preparatory will have the opportunity to hear him during education week and plans are being made for Trelawny when he visits the Diaspora.

His website, which will launch on March 27, will be “A place where my heart can live, a place where my mind can grow.”
